QUO VADIS
Quo Vadis is the title of a classic novel about the time
of Nero in ancient Rome., written in 1895. The writer won a Nobel Prize in 1905. A movie made in 1951 won several Oscars.
Loosely, it means “Where are you going?”
In recent weeks, I’ve read several news items that
make me wonder about things.
One story involved 2 young twin sisters, whose parents
are retired Air Force people. The girls bought hooded sweaters with the AF logo on the, with their own money. The sisters
were born on an AF base. Unfortunately, when they wore them to school they were told to take them off or be suspended.
Another story involved a Connecticut school district banning Halloween parades saying they would offend some students
that didn’t want to take part.
A Pennsylvania
mother was told that she couldn’t fly the American flag, honoring her son who’s in the military. She was told
she had to remove it or pay a fine.
Another case, the government decided that serving pork
or ham in federal prisons would be offensive to Muslim and Jewish prisoners. They decided to remove those meats from the menu,
Why couldn’t they simply offer then to those that wanted pork or ham? I’d bet 90% of the inmates would go that
way.
Sometimes I can’t write fast enough to stay with
the news. As I write this, I read that the twin girls will be allowed to wear their sweaters and the Connecticut district will allow the Halloween parades
Having said that, I wonder why these things happen in
the first place. Think about all the demands to remove Christmas displays and cross memorials honoring veterans from public
properties. Who are these things hurting? If you don’t believe, simply don’t look at them.
Two last points! I feel that the confederate flag is symbolic
of a major event in US history, the Civil
War. Regardless of personal feelings the south fought for their beliefs, Thousands and thousands died for their beliefs. Fathers,
sons, relatives and friends died for their cause. To me, removing those flags from what were once Confederate states ignores
history and insults southerners.
Not for nuttin, but I feel the same about the name of
the football team, the Redskins.
In closing, when I think about all this politically correctness,
and its effect on this once great country, I can only ask, “Quo Vadis?”

PREQUALIFICATIONS
You can’t be an Eagle Scout unless you earn many
merit badges,
You can’t walk into a recruiting station and demand
to be made a general.
You don’t become a doctor without going through
an internship and residency.
You need a certain number of credits to earn a college
degree.
Etc, etc. etc!
But apparently anybody can become president of the United States.
Obama was elected in 2008 despite the fact that he had
no relevant experience. No military or governing experience! A do nothing term as senator. He was basically a block organizer.
His primary claim to fame was an impassioned speech at a democrat convention. Wow! Then we’re faced with Hillary! Can
anyone tell me one thing she’s accomplished to make her worthy of the Presidency? She
had a similar senate term to Barak Nothing done. Is the world and the US
a safer place since she became Secretary of State?
As I look at the events in the mid east. I can’t
find one country that is friendlier to the US
than when she became Secretary of State.
I’m confused! It used to be that when you got promoted
or offered a big time position, you earned it.
Obama got elected president because he was articulate,
African American and made a great speech. (I was impressed!) Hillary got where she is, ----- well I really don’t know why. Perhaps it’s time to make some
pre-qualifications for these major political positions.
At least be a mayor, or veteran, or governor or maybe
even an Eagle Scout ???????

CUBA
A close friend asked me recently for my opinion about the recent
deals and relaxation of embargos on Cuba.
First, let me say that everyone knows that I am a conservative in my thinking and I do appreciate others willing to hear my
thoughts, Sometimes I even like to hear my thoughts aloud.
Before I blurted out a quick response, I thought for a while.
Several things came to mind.
One, my own NJ senators Robert Menendez, and Marco Rubio, senator
from Florida,, both Cuban -Americans, expressed their disfavor with these latest actions. I’m not sure what their reasons
are but it does include the repressive conditions that the Cuban people are forced to live under because of Castro rule. I’m
not sure about how Ted Cruz, another Cuban American a senator from Texas, who by the way
was born in Calgary, Canada,
feels about this new country warming. But I do have to wonder why some very prominent and influential Cuban American politicians
are against this “deal:.
Several thoughts come to mind! First, things really must be bad
on the island otherwise why would so many people risk their lives trying to get to the US in makeshift rafts and cardboard boats? Secondly, they really don’t have
access to many luxuries. There are few places where 1955/56 Chevys, Fords, and even Nash vehicles are still driving around.
There seem to be thousands in Havana. During the warmer months
there are “antique car” shows all around my area. Can you imagine an antique car show in Havana? It can’t happen since most of the cars on the island have been cannibalized
and rebuilt by resident mechanics that they’ll never qualify as antiques.
Another thought that occurs to me after doing much reading and
watching the news, is that most older Cuban Americans are against the thawing of diplomatic relations, while most younger
ones are all for it. I wonder if that’s because the older folks remember how bad things were and the younger one have
no memory. After all, it’s been 56 years since relations between us were severed.
So, somehow, in their infinite wisdom, the Obama brain trust has
decided that now is the time to reopen diplomatic relations with the Castro gang, I really have to wonder why, They talk about
opening trade with Cuba. Two problems with that, First, most of the Cubans can’t afford to buy anything. They’re
driving 1956 and 1956 cars for heavens sake.. Secondly any monies into Cuba
will go into Castro accounts.
I really have to wonder about the negotiating skills of this administration. There is no way this deal with Cuba
makes sense. And coming on top of the recent so called agreement with China
regarding reducing emissions and minimizing the carbon foot prints, I have to believe that they are either incompetent, or
ignorant, or both. All one has to do is look at the milestone dates for us and them and it’s obvious that this was a
stupid deal. In fact, a day or so later, China
reneged on several points.
The brain trust talks about increasing business between Cuba and the US.
What will we get from Cuba? Sugar, rum,
and cigars? Meanwhile they get our money! Correction! The Castro’s get
our money. It makes no sense!
Finally, the bottom line of my thinking in this Cuba thaw, is this. I don’t understand why we are basically rewarding the
Castro’s when they have done nothing to earn it. The Cuban people are still terribly repressed and living below any
normal standard. The Castro’s have done nothing to improve their country and their closest ally in the world is Venezuela, another brutal, repressive country. I
simply don’t understand the politics of this move.

SUNDAY NEWSPAPER ADS
Sunday morning and my
routine is to turn the coffee pot on, take my meds, and get the Sunday newspaper from curb side. Sunday’s issues are
always heavy with a lot of enclosed advertisements. Today’s was no exception.
I sat at the kitchen table,
had a glass of OJ, poured out a cup of coffee and spread out the paper. There’s no need to name the paper since it appears
that they all do the same.
I sipped from my coffee
cup and started to unwrap the paper which usually is thrown onto my driveway in a plastic bag. I separated the sections into
parts I was interested in and those that would immediately be placed in the recycle pile. Oddly, the recycle pile was bigger
than the “good” pile”.
Since I’m retired,
with nothing better to do, I decided to count the ads. Believe it or not, there were 24 separate ads in the paper. I know
it’s Christmas time, and sales are important, but some of these stores weren’t in my area. On top of the sales
flyers, there were about 8 pages of legal advertisements. These are the one that announce sheriff sales and foreclosures.
So I’m sitting there
reading what few pages are left, and realizing that I’m paying a dollar a day, roughly, for a paper that is mostly advertizing,
But more importantly,
I’m wondering what ever happened to the “save a tree” slogan.
All these sheets of paper
are almost instantaneously put in the recycle pile.
This particular newspaper
recently changed their organizational procedure to go to a computerized layout and printing. Personally, I think it stinks.
If it weren’t for the fact that I am addicted to the 2 crosswords everyday, the comics, and the obituaries, I’d
cancel my subscription, The business section is non existent, and the late sport scores are a day late.
All in all, the new paper
layout is terrible. But I still need to have my hard copy in the morning. Oh well!

COINCIDENCE?
(Written shortly before the mid term elections)
Have you noticed that
the price of gas has dropped drastically in the last few weeks? Did you notice that the stock market showed some serious gains
lately?
I may be a true skeptic
and cynic but I really don’t believe in coincidences. I wondered why these positive events are taking place. After all,
there really is no good global news, There’s the Ebola crisis. And ISIS/ISIL is still a real threat. It is obvious that
Putin wants to reestablish the USSR. The
mid east, in general, is in a state of political flux. One can’t tell who are the enemies and who are the friends. And
on and on!
So why are the gas prices
dropping and stocks rising? The only common denominator is that we are only a few days away from a mid term election and things
are not look too solid for the democrats. This is an administration that is a master at manipulating facts and has the media
on its side.
The unemployment rate
is a classic example. In its purest form, the unemployment rate should be the number of unemployed, employable people divided
by the number of available people to employ. For example, if there are 100 workers available and 10 do not have jobs, the
rate is 10%. There are many ways to fudge that number. If you deduct those unemployed that have given up looking for jobs,
say 2 people then the rate drops to 8%. Also, if you factor in the number of people having to hold more than one part time
job the rate drops. My point is that the old adage holds true. Figures don’t lie. Liars figure.
Now ask yourself why the
price of gas has dropped so drastically over the last few months. If you look at the facts, it’s unexplainable. The
oil supply from the mid east is in more jeopardy now than ever before. Our pipe line from Canada is still in limbo. So why, only a few weeks from, arguably, the most important
election in years, does the price of gas drop? That’s a rhetorical question!
Finally, why has the stock
market risen so much lately. I must admit, while not a major stock holder, I have made money in the last week or two. Why?
I really don’t know. Maybe corporations have received good info from the administration. Maybe they are optimistic about
a change in power. I don’t know. But it does seem to me that something is a catalyst for the improvements, again only
a few days before the mid term elections. I have to wonder.
********************************************************
SIGNS OF THE ECONOMY
The current administration
goes through great pains to assure us that the economy is improving. I think many, if not most, would not agree, The housing
market is still down as is the job market regardless of how they manipulate the numbers. Remember the old adage “ Figures
don’t lie. Liars figure!”
Recently, I’ve noticed
two things that may refute their numbers.
About 7 or 8 weeks ago,
fed up with all the robocalls I get to my land line, I decided to let them go to my answering machine, unless I knew the caller.
They never leave a message. I decided to keep track of them on my computer. You know the robocalls, I’m sure. In short, I have received a total of 96 robocalls, an average of about 2 a day although
some days there are 5 or 6. Those calls came from 50 different area codes.
The
second thing I’ve noticed is in my local newspaper. That’s right! I’m old enough to still want my news in
hard copy. Anyway, today’s paper is typical of every day. It had a total of 56 pages, 22 ˝ of which were legal advertizing.
They’re the ones with such small print that you need a magnifying glass to be able to read them. But then again, nobody
that I know reads them. Probably 90% of these notices are for sheriff seizures and sales and mortgage foreclosures.
It
occurred to me that both these situations cast a negative aspect on the “economy is getting better” statements.
First of all, imagine how many people are involved in robocalling, Could it be that they only do it because they can’t
find a normal job? After all, who wants a job where you know the person you’re calling will be angry? I have to wonder
how many would jump at an opportunity in other areas.
As
for the legal ads, just simply consider that they are making public notices of folks in tax arrears and losing their homes.
Tell me again how the housing market is getting better.
I may
be wrong, but to me, these are sure signs that the economy is not getting better.

NFL LENIENCY
Gee,
what a shock! Professional football players prone to violence off t the field!
In recent days, there
have been several cases of NFL players being accused of domestic violence, child abuse, and other felony crimes. What a surprise!
Currently there are possible
cases being made against Ray Rice ( Ravens) for domestic violence, Adrian Peterson (Vikings) for child abuse, Greg Hardy (Panthers),
and Ray MacDonald (49ers) for other offenses. There are about 10 other players arrested for varying charges.
You can go back years
and find others like O.J. Simpson (Bills) and Ray Lewis (Ravens), and many others.
Are you surprised? I’m
not! Football is a violent sport. I imagine that players become immune to the violence at some point. Why aren’t there
similar situations in baseball. Basketball, hockey and even soccer exhibit some levels of violence.
It seems that these foot
ball players start to receive “special” treatment as early as midget football and Pop Warner football. If they
show any talent at all, they are sheparded by alumni and coaches to local high schools, where they start to receive the publicity
and adulation many of them seek. Here in NJ, players are actually recruited just to play football for high schools. I wonder
if the recruiters ever ask about the players’ academic success. There are various ratings agencies that rate the players
not only in the state but nationally as well. Is it any wonder that the players get “big heads?” Wouldn’t
anyone? They see their names and pictures in the local media. They read and hear how great they are. They can do nothing wrong.
Then, after a stellar
high school career, it’s off to college after being recruited for months. Now they are in the national eye, on TV, doing
interviews. WOW! How great. They are told how great they are, how much they’re needed, and how well they’ll do
after the college career. Many do very well. Some even get an education. Most don’t.
Those that do get pro
contracts and make a lot of money. Now they are rich, spoiled, and used to getting everything they want. Millions of dollars,
travel, adulation, women, the whole shebang!
At this point, they feel
like they can do nothing wrong. Whatever they want they get. Whatever they need is given to them. They don’t like to
hear the word no.
What happens then? The
Rice, Peterson, Hardy, and MacDonald scenarios! Is it any wonder?

#2, DEREK JETER
By now, anyone with any interest in
sports, and many that don’t, knows that Derek Jeter is retiring from baseball after 20 years with the New York Yankees.
Jeter was the regular shortstop and
captain for this 2014 club that, to the dismay of Yankee fans, did not make the playoffs this year.
Jeter was honored by his peers and
opposing teams in every city where he played this year. He received dozens of gifts, mementos, and other honors wherever he
went and deservedly so.
He was an unusual athlete, an oddity.
He never hit a woman. He never did steroids or other drugs. He never abused a child. He never received a DUI citation. I don’t
think anyone ever heard him use fowl language. All he did was play baseball the way it should be played. I coached Little
League and Babe Ruth for 18 years and I’d have no hesitation to tell those kids, “See Derek Jeter? Just play like
him and act like him. Play hard and never quit on a play. Do that and you’ll make every coach you ever play for happy.”
I’ve never been a Yankee fan.
Just the opposite, in fact. I am a Red Six fan dating back to the Ted Williams, Carl Yastremski, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice, and others. Judging by the players that the Yanks got from Boston, they must have been Red Sox fans as well. Think about it. Roger
Clemens, Wade Boggs, Jacoby Ellsbury, and don’t forget Babe Ruth. Jeter could play on any team with any of those guys.
Obviously, I’m a Jeter fan. The
man seems to be a perfect gentleman, a good role model, and an appropriate, classy representative for baseball. With his statistics,
he is a sure bet to enter the Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
In fact, I was also a fan of Jorge
Posada and Mariano Rivera. It would be hard to find fault with any of them and they will be difficult to replace.

CASTING A SPELL
By now the entire world knows about
the radical Muslim, jihadist group that has beheaded several Americans and British citizens, and murdered hundreds of, according
to them, non-believers.
When I hear them being talked about
in the various media, I hear them referred to a ISIS, ISIL, IS, or Levant. I listened tp the hearings today on this situation
and noticed that some, mostly the military personnel, called them ISIS while the politicians
seemed to prefer ISIL.
FYI, ISIS stands for Islamic State
of Iraq and Syria, ISIL stands for Islamic state of Iraq And Levant. IS is Islamic State and Levant is a translation of al-Sham,
the phrase the group uses to describe itself. Basically, it’s a description of a much larger area in the mid east beyond
the borders of Iraq and Syria.
To quote on of my least favorite people,
“At this point, what difference does it make?”
This group, whatever you call them,
is a group of radical, Muslim fundamentalists that is driven to destroy anyone, any society, any group of people that does
not adhere to their core beliefs.
They are a particularly violent sect,
literally advertizing and using social media to publicize their beheadings and crucifixions of non believers. They have murdered
hundreds of people that they deem to be non believers. They are a barbaric, violent group intent on taking over not only the
mid east, but also the entire world. They are an evil, blood thirsty group that obviously has no moral code. They are well
funded by oil money and have been very active in recruiting new members via social media.
It seems to me that these fanatics
are simply an evolution from al-Quida, Taliban, Hezbollah, and all the other radical groups.
It should be noted that we know about
many so called Americans that have gone to the mid east to join forces and fight with and for the sect, They have gone from
some innocuous areas like Minneapolis. The person that beheaded
Foley was apparently a British citizen, a rap artist. I remember when the 911
attack on the WTC, and the Pentagon, and possibly the White House occurred. I remember seeing videos of crowds of people cheering
the event in Paterson, NJ and Dearborn, Michigan. That truly upset and scared me. NJ is
my home state and Paterson is only 20 miles away. These people
were cheering an attack on the US.
Today, it was announced that Australian
authorities have arrested a group of ISIS sympathizers that threaten to behead normal every
day citizens. When will they come to the US?
Now the US is in serious
discussions about how to handle ISIS (I’ll use that term for now). The biggest question
is now whether or not to put our military forces on the ground in the ISIS infected areas.
I feel that a more appropriate question is what to do about all the radicals
currently on our soil and what to do about the American citizens, with US passports, that went to the Mideast to fight with
ISIS. I wonder how many of those people that cheered for the terrorists on 911 are planning attacks on our own soil. Perhaps
there should be an immediate ban on entering the US from any of the ISIS host countries. Perhaps it’s time to secure our southern border with Mexico. Perhaps it’s time to truly boycott Mexico.
I don’t know if many Americans feel as I do but I am more frightened
now than ever before in my near 77 years of life.

YUK!
The other day a friend told me that he was having liver for dinner that night.
I can’t stand liver. My Mother served liver to us when I was a kid and I really didn’t like it, especially when
I found out what the function of the liver in the body was. Mom would go on and on about how good liver was for you and its
many benefits. It didn’t matter to me. I didn’t like the taste or texture, no matter how many onions or mushrooms
were on the platter. I’ve never outgrown that distaste.
I had similar feelings about eating kidneys. She gave us the same arguments.
Personally, I thought that they tasted like dried up mud. Also, it felt like I was chewing small rubber balls.
Anyway, that got me to thinking about foods that I can’t or won’t
eat for any reason.
The first thing that came to mind was tripe. Tripe is a food prepared from
the stomach linings of several animals, primarily cows. It is a dominant ethnic food in some cultures. Now I admit that it
may be good, but there’s no way that I can force myself to eat stomach parts from a cow or any other animal. I simply
can’t stomach the thought (pun intended).
Another eating no-no for me is “brains”. Eating brains is another
ethnic oriented menu item, particularly in Asian countries. People eat monkey brains as well as brains from other animals.
In the US, calves brains are most popular.
Again, it’s one of those gourmet foods I just can’t put in my mouth. Seems to me that eating the brains from a
baby cow is just not appetizing. Plus, isn’t that the preferred food of some “monsters?”
Another menu no-no for me is escargot! Basically, it’s a snail. I have
had to wash the snail slime from my front walk many times and the thought of ingesting a snail simply initiates feelings of
nausea in me. Just the thought activates my gag reflex. Yet I don’t have a problem with clams, mussels, or oysters.
Along more normal foods, I don’t eat lamb or fresh game, like venison,
rabbits, etc. Some how I’ve never been able to shake the feeling that I was eating Bambi’s mom or one of his forest
friends.
Another item that won’t be on my dinner plate is abalone. Abalone is
a shell fish that I think is the subject of the Shell Oil logo. The problem I have with abalone is that I have never had one
that I enjoyed. They always seem hard and chewy to me. I had a friend that lived in Washington
state that used to scuba dive and catch his own abalone. He told me that the reason why I never had a good one was that they
weren’t prepared right and invited me to his home to see how good it could be. To make a long story short, I could have
resoled my shoes with his version. That was about 30 years ago and I never tried it again.
**********************************************************
PAIN
Anyone that knows me or reads my articles
knows that I’m a cancer survivor. I went through chemo, radiation, and surgery 6 years ago to get me through a bout
with Stage 3C colorectal cancer.
Over my lifetime, I have also had surgery
to correct a mandible problem, had minor injuries, had a broken leg as a result of being run over by car at age 3, and in
recent years have suffered through severe, painful bouts of sciatica, the last one lasting 4 months. I remember the nurse
asking me after my surgery to rate the pain I was in, on a scale of 1 to 10. I answered, “After my episodes of sciatica,
I’d call this a 2.” I’m no stranger to pain.
To this point, I’d have to say
that my sciatica episodes are the worst pains I’ve ever experienced.
Recently, however, a new source of
physical agony has come into my life that rates high on the pain scale: a chronic ingrown toe nail! It started about 2 years
ago. The pain was intense and, according to Murphy’s Law, I seemed to bump that toe into every obstruction along my
pathways. At first, I opted to go to a local manicure/pedicure parlor to get my nails trimmed. To be honest, I had trouble
bending over to reach my toes. It was a very nice Vietnamese girl that worked on me and she did a nice job. Unfortunately,
it only lasted a few weeks. After a few sessions, I decided to see a podiatrist. I’m writing this now because I have
another appointment with him tomorrow. I am not looking forward to it.
Ingrown toe nails can be a real problem.
It affected my ability to play golf and negated wearing some of my shoes. It’s amazing how such a little thing can cause
so much pain. I am in awe when I think about the fact that my big toes are the farthest part of my body from the pain center,
the brain. One would think that it would be less susceptible to pain.
Not true! The last visit to the podiatrist
actually brought tears to my eyes. I was sitting in the procedure room in a chair with arm rests. As he worked, and by the
way he was very good, he told me the next steps would hurt. Hurt??? I almost ripped the arm rests off the chair as I levitated
1 foot off the seat Tomorrow, I may ask for something to numb the toe.
**********************************************************
AND THE WINNER IS………
We can all remember playing games as
kids, many of us as adults. Generally, the one that ended up with the most points won the game.
For example, in baseball, or basketball,
or hockey, etc, the teams that outscore the other wins the game, Generally, the one that has the most property and hotels
in Monopoly wins the game. On Easter egg hunts, the kid with the mist eggs wins. In fact, in almost every game except golf,
the side with the most points wins.
I was thinking about that the other
day and decide that it applies to politicians as well, especially the President of the United States. I won’t use the term scandals but I will apply the phrase
“big mistakes” to several former and present Chief Executives. Remember, whoever ends up with the most points
wins.
Jimmy Carter served as President from
1977 to 1981. In my mind, the most memorable event in his term was the Iran
hostage crisis. Everything else was secondary and relatively forgettable. I’m an engineer and I’ve always felt
that engineers make bad presidents. In short, politics is the art of compromise. Sometimes, 2 has to equate to 3. An engineer
believes that 2 always equals 2. There is no compromise. Therefore, Carter gets 1 point.
Ronald Reagan had his Iran Contra situation. Beyond that, there were no real issues
in his administration. Ergo, he gets 1 point.
John F. Kennedy, who I really liked
and admired had his Bay of Pigs incident. But he followed that up with his defiance of the
USSR, forcing them to leave Cuba.
His assassination cut short what may have been a memorable administration. He earns only one point.
George H. W. Bush had to live with
his “Read my lips!” promise. 1 point lost!
George W. Bush had a mixed results
term. He was President when the Twin Towers
in NY were reduced to ash and rubble. Unfortunately, 9/11/2001 will always be an indelible mark of his term. Also, he made
the unforgettable remarks on the deck of a warship that the war in Iraq
was over. In my thinking, the conflict in that section of the world will never be over. In short, I like George W. Bush but
in all honesty, I think he has earned only 2 points.
Then we come to Bill Clinton, a man
I think could have been one of our greatest presidents. Unfortunately, his Achilles tendon turned out to be a young woman
named Monica. A lot of men might not think that to be a big problem. Unfortunately, it’s Clinton’s point.
At long last, we have President Obama, or should I say His Majesty, the Teflon
President? He has been in office for about six years and he is setting an all time record for points earned.
To be concise, consider the following.
His previous relationship to Rev, Wright, the minister that said “God
damn America” and Bill Ayres a suspected
terrorist. 1 point!
The government phone tapping of several reporters. 1 point.
Guns to Mexico.
1 point.
NSA surveillance program. 1 point.
An undue number of his appointees and aides leaving, especially Rahm Emanuel.
1 point.
The IRS targeting conservative groups. 1 point.
The Benghazi
situation. 1 point.
The Bergdahl prisoner exchange. 1 point.
The VA scandal. 1 point.
Then there’s Obamacare. The jury is still out. 1 point.
There are several other items I could mention but what’s the point.
We have added the points and by a land slide, the winner is Barack Obama.!

FISCAL FOOLISHNESS
In the past several weeks, there were
several stories in the news that caught my attention, not for the subject matter, but for implications.
First, there was a story about a retired
police officer, killed in a car crash on I-80, at the age of 52. He was retired at the age of 51.
Then there was a story about a retired
NY officer, allegedly shot and killed by his girl friend after a “bad” breakup. He was 51.
Finally, there’s the more recent
story about the girl suing her parents, for tuition, expenses, and other items, after she left the parents home, at 18 years
old, to stay with her best friend. It turns out her father is a retired police chief from a nearby town and he’s probably
in his early fifties.
Why did these stories catch my attention?
Simple! Two items: retired and 51 years old.
All three of these men, retired in
their early fifties and based on other information sources are probably receiving pensions in the six figure range. And they
also receive other perks like paid hospitalization, education, and uniform expenses.
Think about that for a minute or two!
If the average is $100, 000 per year pension and they live to 80 or 85, that
will mean 30-35 years on pension totaling about $3,000,000 each. And that doesn’t include payouts for unused sick, vacation,
and personal time.
And they
wonder why we have such a tax problem! Think about it! The education
industry
is somewhat in the same category. Education managers and executives are
receiving
the same sort of benefit packages.
Teachers do pretty well too. I know
quite a few that retired early only to go back and get other positions adding to the taxpayers’ burden.
In all these lavish retirements, it
should be remembered that they are paid for by taxes. Public services are not funded by the sales of goods or services. They
are paid for by taxing all Americans, the majority of whom are not public employees.
Sour grapes, I know! I but the point
needs to be made. We cannot continue to allow the privileged public sector employees to use the system as they do now without
seeing the fiscal dam burst. If we don’t do something about double dipping, retiring early, and abusing sick, personal,
and vacation policies, we will condemn ourselves into financial oblivion. Look at how many cities have already declared bankruptcy.
Detroit and Stockton come to
mind.
It’s time to take action.

DIVINE
HELP OR?
I was reading the sports section of
the Ledger over coffee a couple of weeks ago. There were a lot of interesting articles about professional and college football,
the major league baseball play-offs, and high school football.
Needless to say, I read many of the
articles, but one article particularly caught my attention. It was a list of the top 20 high school football teams in the
state.
The name, St. Peter’s Prep, my
alma mater, was prominent. At that time, they were positioned in third place with a 5-0 record. But that didn’t surprise
me! We have been accustomed to seeing them highly ranked for years and years.
What did surprise me a bit was the
fact that eleven of the top twenty were Catholic high schools as were nine of the top ten. The only non parochial school in
the top ten was Montclair, a power house even back in our
high school days.
There was a complete absence of many
of the top teams that were common back then. Missing were schools like Memorial, Phillipsburg,
Union, Clifton, and others that were perennial winners back
in the 50s and 60s.
I started to wonder why this was so,
beginning to think that God might be a football fan and was taking some sort of divine intervention. But, after further contemplation,
I realized that the reason for this Catholic school domination might be more earthly.
Coaches are a large part of any athletic
endeavor, Back in our day, Prep’s football coach, Bill Cochrane, Memorial’s coach, Joe Coviello, and Warren Wolf
at Lakewood High were legendary figures. I have to wonder if the coaches at Catholic High schools today are better than their
peers at public schools. It may be simply that they are better paid and thus tend to lean to parochial football.
Finally, one thought does occur to
me. It seems that today’s Catholic high schools are more like pre college programs, particularly in the football and
basketball sports. From what I can see, they are allowed to do things to help their sports programs that public schools cannot.
Recently, there was a newspaper article
about a Catholic school in north Jersey whose football program has grown to super power status
in the last couple of years. The article talked about how their program got several players that transferred from other Catholic
schools, immediately upgrading the team. It seems that this is common practice
in parochial and other private schools.
Also they can travel, not only throughout
the state but to other states as well to recruit promising players, offering scholarships to well respected schools. This
also is common practice. Teams travel routinely to other states to play distant power house teams in Maryland,
Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
I understand this completely. These
are private schools funded by tuitions, grants, and reputations. Winning teams are a major advantage in these areas. But is
it fair to most public schools?
Thinking back to my own days at St. Peter’s Prep., before this recruiting emphasis was as large as it is today,
I wonder how things might have changed if city high schools were allowed to recruit outside of their “territory”.
What would have changed if good players could transfer between Jersey City
schools, Lincoln, Dickinson, Ferris, and Snyder? I’m sure that quality of play would change drastically between schools.
All in all, I’m proud that my
alma mater is doing so well in athletics. But I can’t help but wonder about the system when 9 out of 10 of the top football
teams in the state are all Catholic schools.

MIDEAST MORASS/MIASMA
The United States
has been involved in political or military affairs in the mid east for many years. Even the Marine Corps musical hymn, which
was written in 1919, refers to the shores of Tripoli. There have been successful actions, but there seems to have been many more that have
not been so successful, especially in recent years.
I have come to believe that we are
fighting a losing battle in that geographical region. Obviously, oil and oil products are the primary driving causes for our
presence and activities there. But it seems to me that we’re butting our patriotic heads into a brick wall.
Just in the last couple of weeks, I
have read reports of atrocities all over the region, in spite of the dollars, efforts, and killed or injured military in some
of the countries.
For example, just this week, Muslim
terrorists, known as al-Shabaab, a Somalia based Al-Qaeda affiliate, raided an upscale shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing
dozens, wounding hundreds and virtually destroying the mall. According to reports, the terrorists quizzed the people asking
if they were Muslims. If not, they were killed. Many victims were innocent shoppers, women and children.
Another article said that there were
an average of 100 murders in Afghanistan, and increasing as the American military amp down.
In Pakistan,
85 were killed and over 100 wounded at a Christian church wedding. 2 suicide bombers, identified as Taliban supporters, were
Muslim terrorists.
In Iraq, beneficiaries
of US training and education, over 50 Iranian exiles in an exile camp, were selected and murdered because they were known
to be Hussein supporters.
Also, in the past several weeks, terrorist
bombings have killed dozens more.
Syria has become the center of attention
in the last few weeks due to atrocities committed against civilians, including the use of chemical warfare.
This kind of behavior is not seen in
sane, civilized people. The desire and mind set to kill innocent women and children cannot be seen in normal, rational people.
The terrorists are truly fanatics,
The one common denominator in all these
situations is that Muslim terrorists were involved. That cannot be denied. Even the recent killings at Fort Hood here in
the states were conducted by a Muslim fanatic.
When will we learn? It would appear
to be obvious that this violence will somehow be imported into our own country. Heaven only knows how many sleeper terrorist
cells are already here. Remember back on 9/11/2001 when Muslim terrorists hijacked airplanes and crashed into the pentagon and WTC? A third
was forced down in western Pennsylvania by brave passengers. It was headed for the White House. I repeat “When will we
learn?
Instead, the US continues
to try to bring democracy and freedom to an area that can’t do it for themselves. Short of an all out war against these
terrorist groups by the rest of the world, especially the peace loving people in those countries, they will continue their
nefarious actions. The US cannot do it by ourselves. In fact, our actions are creating more intense hatred for
US. The UN is a paper tiger. Until, and unless, world wide support of US actions is available, we should stay out of the area.
Webster defines a morass as “something
that traps, confuses or impedes”. Miasma is defined as “a pervasive influence or atmosphere that tends to deplete
or corrupt”.
I think both words define the current
mid east region.

WORLD
COPS
VFB © September, 2013
I’ve written before
regarding my feelings about the US involving ourselves in conflicts occurring in other countries. One has to wonder what
we gain by poking our noses n other folks problems, particularly in the mid east area.
I try to keep updated
as to what’s happening around the world. Here’s a short recap of some events that happened in just the past couple
of weeks.
Nairobi, Kenya,- We are all aware of this situation. A group of Somali terrorists raided an upscale
mall in Kenya, in the heart of the tourist area. This was done to retaliate against Nigerian attacks
against their group in Somalia. The group, called al-Shabaab, killed about 30 innocent shoppers, virtually destroyed
the mall. It occurred during a childrens’ day event. They selected the victims by asking them, or quizzing them, as
to whether they were Muslims or not. If not, they were killed.
Afghanistan- There’s an ongoing report regarding increased killing by the Taliban in proportion to the decrease
in the number of American troops over the past few months. Estimates say that the killings average about 100 per week.
Iraq-
50+ Iranians, living in an Iraqi exile camp, were identified as members of the MEK, a Saddam Hussein supporters group,
and murdered. Just in the last few days, more than 50 people were killed in a series of eleven car bombings.
Pakistan-
Two suicide bombers targeted a Christian church. 85 were killed, and 141 wounded, in a Taliban raid at a wedding as
retribution against non Muslims.
Nigeria-
50 college students were roused from sleep in their dorms and killed by Islamic terrorists. Most of the killed were
actually Muslims. Apparently, the cause of the terrorist is to make Nigeria a Muslim based country despite
the fact that half the population is Christian. The terrorists have conducted many raids over the last few weeks, killing
dozens.
Syria-
The ongoing civil war has taken the lives of more than 140,000 people. 1,400 were killed in poison gas attacks. Many
thousands have been forced to leave the country.
United States- In recent times, we have experienced the Fort Hill massacre, conducted by a member of our own military,
an officer. It was done in the name of Allah although it’s being referred to as work place violence, not terrorism.
Everyone remembers the attacks against the WTC, The Pentagon, and the White House on 9/11/2001.
Due to the porosity of
our borders, one can only wonder how many more Muslim terrorists are currently residing within our borders, waiting for the
right moment to conduct more acts of terrorism against innocent citizens.
You don’t have to
look deeply to see the common threads in all of this. First: Taliban, -al Queda,-al Shabaab, -Islamist terrorists and second:
indiscriminate violence.
I’ve only discussed
6 countries but this violence infection permeates throughout the world. Remember Bosnia Croatia,
and Serbia? The US seems to be the primary intervention in many of these situations.
It would seem obvious
that we cannot be in all places at all times. Why can’t Kenya, Afghanistan,
Iraq. Pakistan, Nigeria, and Syria solve their own internal problems? Why can’t they unite against this common enemy,
Muslim/Islamist fanatics? Why do we, the United States, thousands of miles away, need to sacrifice our young men and women,
and spend our hard earned taxed dollars, for people that seem incapable of change and, in some cases, of being civilized.
It seems that our primary
interests in the region are oil and oil derivatives, unless the poppies in Afghanistan can be converted to fuel.
We should be working to develop more sources like the Keystone pipeline, safer off shore drilling rigs, and even cleaner coal.
Wind turbines and solar
panels can only do so much.
Lets start putting our
economic, scientific, technical, and labor resources into our own country.

WHAT A GREAT COUNTRY!
August, 2013
Just finished reading a news story about a large increase in aliens
coming across the border in San Diego seeking asylum due to a “credible
fear of drug cartels”.
Apparently, it’s
government policy to house and feed these asylum seekers until they can have their appeals heard by an immigration judge to
determine just how credible the credible fears are. There are several steps in the legal process before this happens so some
aliens are put up in hotels. Others are sent to addresses in Texas, Florida,
and New York. ICE says that most times these addresses are bogus. By the way,
altho’ most of these aliens come from Mexico, some have
come from other countries such as Guatemala, Haiti,
Iraq, and Romania.
It should be noted that many “disappear” into the system before their court dates and are seldom seen again.
I really don’t have a problem with true asylum seekers.
However, it appears that this new surge in crying asylum has been orchestrated by someone. It is obvious that it’s simpler
to take money from the immigrants and teach them this new system than to try to sneak across our borders, trek though our
southwestern desert areas and assimilate into the US mainstream.
All this being said, I believe that this must be stopped, immediately.
Imagine the thinking south of our borders with Mexico. “If
we cry for asylum, they will house us in hotels, feed us and give us medical care and we don’t have to do anything illegal,”
Who wouldn’t jump at that opportunity?
If you want to stop it, don’t put them up in hotels, etc.
Send them all to Gitmo. That’ll slow down the influx.

TEFLON PRESIDENT
VFB ©
May, 2013
Back in the 1980-1990’s, John Gotti, a recognized
mob leader, became known as the “Teflon® Don” because he was continuously acquitted at trials. Nothing seemed
to stick to him and he wasn’t brought to justice until years later. Because of that, he earned the nickname and no one
questioned why.
A similar thing is happening with President Obama.
It seems to me that president Obama has wrested the Teflon®
title from John Gotti in a big way.
Let’s go back a ways to make my overall point.
There’s no doubt that the majority of the American
public did not share the beliefs of Rev. Wright. Remember the infamous phrase, “God damn America!”?
According to most accounts, Rev. Wright was a very influential factor in the molding of the thoughts and opinions of our future
president. Yet somehow, Pres. Obama has managed to cleanse his image and minimize the impact that Rev. Wright had on his thinking.
Then there was the Bill Ayers connection. Ayers, a member
of the Weather underground, a radical left group in the ‘70s, who was involved in several bombings of government buildings,
Ayers and his wife hosted the dinner party at which Obama was introduced as the candidate for the senate in Illinois.
He and Ayers also served on quite a few organizations together. After all that, Obama says that he and Ayers were just neighborhood
acquaintances and no one other than some conservatives is talking about it.
In spite of the fact that Obama had no real government
experience, zero business experience, no foreign relations experience, and obviously, no military experience, he was elected
President in 2008. That seems amazing to me. Apparently the American voting people felt that his speech at the 2004 Democrat
convention made him qualified,
No one seemed to care about his obvious lack of qualifications.
Since he’s been in office, it seems like there is
someone leaving his administration at least once a month. The most notable was Rahm Emanuel who left a prestigious position
of Chief of Staff to run for Mayor of Chicago. Really? Leaving one of the most
important positions in the country to be Mayor of Chicago? I can only wonder why.
On top of that, a number of his financial picks have also left. Again, there is no hue and cry as to the reasons why “his
people” are jumping ship. I wonder why!
On top of all this, there are a number of other instances
but I don’t think there’s a need to add more to the thesis. The next 3+ years will prove to be interesting.
In spite of all this, he is still squeaky clean in the
public eye. Amazing, truly Teflon coated.
More recently, there have been several events that seem
to define the Obama protective aura.
It stated with Benghazi
back in October, 2012. Four Americans were killed, including our ambassador, during an apparent terrorist attack on our embassy
there. There has been a lot of controversy as to whether or not it was a terrorist attack, how soon and how much the White
House knew, whether or not we could have sent in military help, etc, etc. Hillary Clinton seems to be in the center of some
controversy. Why did the powers that be push the story that it was not a terrorist attack but a reaction to an anti Islam
video.
Even more recently, it’s been discovered that the
IRS targeted some conservative groups, notably Tea Party groups, in deciding tax exempt status.
I won’t go into details. It’s in all the media outlets. But the fact is that the “blame” or “guilt”
such as it is , somehow slides off the President’s back like rain on a Rain X “™ treated windshield.
Now there’s another situation brewing. Apparently,
federal authorities seized the phone and e mail records of several people including Fox news network Chief Washington correspondent.
The seizures included many personal messages, even some to and from his parents. The approval for this action has apparently
been traced back to Eric Holder, the Attorney General. There are many serious questions about this and much more will become
public in the coming weeks. Again, somehow this fiasco cannot be traced back to the president. Talk about plausible deniability.
All these seem to have a bias that is prevalent in this
administration. The President refers to them as “phony scandals”. Imagine, 4 people murdered, American citizens
rights being trampled, and political leanings being stifled and he deems them as phony issues.
Yet he is still squeaky clean in the public eye. Amazing,
truly Teflon coated.
There are many other events that somehow should reflect
on the President or his people but never seems to affect him.
Remember during the last presidential race when:
-someone said that Romney was not the face of the Mormans
-someone called Romney a felon
-Romney was accused of not paying taxes
These were all punches below the belt. The president should
have ordered his people to “cease and desist” but he didn’t. Why? His Teflon® coated back deflected and
shielded him from a negative image.
The people still love their Teflon® President.

Trayvon Martin
August, 2013
Recently, Pres. Obama, the leader of the United
States, of all it’s citizens, regardless of race, religion, color, or political bent,
made a statement regarding the Martin/Zimmerman case that caused me great concern.
I quote: “Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.”
Earlier he said, “Trayvon could have been my son.”
Much has been said and written in the media about those comments. Some
say it’s a positive step in bettering race relations in the US.
Some say it’s merely a diversionary tactic to steer public attention away from Benghazi,
the IRS, NSA, and a myriad of other government problems.
Personally, I don’t think it was either, at least not entirely.
I believe the President said exactly what he intended.
My problem is that I think it is devisive in and of itself.
It’s my belief that the office of United States President should
represent the entire country, regardless of race, creed, gender, or color. Clearly, the President has leaned in one direction.
Many whites could have stated similar things. During the course of
my career, I have found it necessary to travel in some dangerous inner city areas. There were times when I feared for my safety.
Yes, I could have been Trayvon in past years, but on the other side of the black/white spectrum. Do I talk about it? Not often.
Not ever in a public forum! What positive impact could it have? None that I can think of at this time. Perhaps President Obama
should have considered the possible impact of his words before speaking.
No-one can deny the improvements in race relations and the plight of
African-Americans over the last few decades.
Think about the names Obama, Condaleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Eric Holder,
and many others. These are some of the most powerful and influential people in the US.
The mayors of most major American cities, including Philadelphia,
Detroit, Cleveland, Washington,
DC and dozens of others are African American. Dozens of US Congressmen and Senators are African American.
Let’s not even think about the entertainment and sports industries.
Truly, African Americans have come a long way.
Yes there are still problems in the black communities but maybe it’s
time to stop blaming whites for those problems and look to the root causes. Let’s look at the lack of family units,
single mothers, drugs, and yes, poverty. All these are intertwined.
It’s time to start being honest with our society.
